……actually, under article 10 of the European Convention on Human Rights - a pretty landmark declaration of universal rights which has been operative since 1953 - ‘freedom of expression’ is limited by considerations ‘necessary in a democratic society’, such as ‘for the protection of the rights of others’. So when you say that a woman ‘deserves to get raped’ or that immigrants should ‘go back to their own countries’ or that black people are ‘ghetto people’ or that homosexuality is ‘just kind of wrong’, you are in fact violating articles 14 - ‘freedom from discrimination’, 3 - ‘freedom from torture, inhuman or degrading treatment’, and possibly even article 5 - ‘right to liberty and security of person’. And yes I do sound like a sanctimonious arse, but just thought you should know that citing ‘free speech’ as an excuse for discrimination has no basis in human rights law. :)
Oooo, actual text to throw back at the next batch self righteous libertarians who claim that their right to verbally degrade you is more important than your right to live free from harassment
